Pixel-inspired children’s playground, ‘My World’ game comes to life

The pixel style comes from the early days of video games, when computers had limited performance, so the first game developers had to use a very limited number of pixel dots to make up the screen to save energy and ensure smooth operation.


Even with limited hardware, this pixel style of gaming took the world by storm. The earliest can be traced back to 1972, when the game PONG was developed by the American company Atari.

It was followed by Space Invaders, a 1978 game by Japanese gamer Taihō, and Pac-Man by Namco of Japan.

By 1983, Nintendo of Japan launched the FC Red and White, a true and much more popular home console, and the era of pixelated style came full circle.

Pixel style was born in the game world, but the application of the scene can not only in the virtual world, it has gone from the screen to reality. Inspired by the sandbox game My World, this 3D pixel style PIXEL CITY Children's Paradise in Beijing carries the wild ideas into people’s real life.

Paradise Front

PIXEL CITY Children's Playground in Beijing was designed and constructed by Grand Orient Wax Art, with the intention that the space would be experienced like a game player who can play in a randomly generated 3D world based on a combination of cubes.

Paradise Desk

The composition of the space is like a novel exploration and journey in three dimensions, with highs and lows, ups and downs, iterations and layers.

Arcade equipment area 

A variety of pixelated graphics and colours are used throughout the park to give the whole park the look of a giant game map, allowing visitors to experience a realistic version of My World.

The ground is dominated by green, restoring a large blank grassy area from the game screen, simulating a space that allows visitors to give free rein to their imagination.

The walls, on the other hand, are colour-blocked in blue, purple and white, giving the space a visual sensation of joyful play.

Children's Town Entrance & Shoe Change

In PIXEL CITY Children’s Playground, a children's town where children are free to explore, the designers have created a space for a simulated reality experience in a pixel world by using unused shapes and structures.

Vocational and life experience games

In the Children's Town, the designers used creative techniques to arrange and combine different coloured cubes to create spaces for children to explore freely, such as an engineering academy, a supermarket, a ranch, a wood pellet pool and a naughty castle.

Naughty Castle

In the pixelated design of the Naughty Castle, the designers used a limited number of colours and icons to create a vibrant and fun environment. These brightly coloured pixelated graphics not only attract children's attention but also provide a pleasant visual experience.
