As family entertainment centers (FECs) bring together an increasingly diverse mix of activities, arcades, children’s play, active entertainment, and food and beverage areas are often found within the same venue. For developers and operators, attracting guests across different age groups is only part of the challenge. They must also consider how to maintain a strong, consistent brand identity as visitors move between different attractions and zones.
In its 2027 FEC trends outlook, the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA) identifies hybrid venues that combine multiple activities, along with multigenerational themed environments and storytelling, as important directions for the industry.
Against this backdrop, brand visual identity (VI) design must extend beyond a logo and mascot to include wayfinding, themed décor, and brand materials throughout the venue. A consistent visual language can help visitors recognize the brand at every stage of their journey—from entering the center and moving between zones to using membership services.
A typical FEC may combine a fast-paced arcade, a welcoming children’s playground, and leisure areas for families to spend time together. If each zone uses completely unrelated colors and forms, the venue can feel like a collection of disconnected spaces. Yet if every area looks the same, each zone may lose the character that makes its experience distinctive.
The key is to give different zones a shared identity with varied expressions. Early in the project, the design team can establish the venue’s core story, signature characters, and primary colors. Each zone can then interpret those elements in a way that suits its activities.
For example, a science-fiction theme might become a dramatic time-travel entrance, a vivid arrangement of light and visual effects in the arcade, and more subtle interstellar details in the leisure area. Visitors can enjoy changes in scenery while still recognizing the same brand world throughout the venue.
Located in Nanjing, BIONOVA covers 1,039 square meters and combines an adult arcade with a children’s playground. Elephant Sculpture Art Company was responsible for the project’s brand VI design and themed décor design throughout the venue.
A story-led approach to character design: The design team reimagined the classic tale of the tortoise and the hare. On the future planet of BIONOVA, the two characters pilot spacecraft in an interstellar race. Along the way, they put competition aside and help each other move forward. The story gives the brand a positive message while providing visual material for the space.
Extending VI into the venue and brand materials: The logo combines the brand name with interstellar trajectories, while purple, blue, orange, and teal form the standard color palette. These VI guidelines inform the lighting and forms used in the arcade and children’s areas. They also extend to wayfinding, event posters, membership cards, and staff uniforms, creating consistency between the physical space and branded materials.
Located in Phnom Penh, PLAYER ONE covers approximately 3,000 square meters and brings together arcade games, shooting games, and retro roller skating. The project uses science fiction and time travel as its overarching theme, with contrasting red, blue, and black tones and metallic finishes establishing the visual direction.
A gateway between themed settings: The “Time Wheel” serves as a central visual element. The arcade features light strips and robot-themed art installations, while the shooting area uses a gray-and-black palette accented by character artwork. At the roller-skating entrance, a blue-lit “Time Corridor” leads visitors into a setting inspired by 1990s disco and skating culture.
Characters that reinforce the story: A cat-shaped robot, a camera-shaped robot, and a spacecraft character appear across the project’s visual design. They connect the different entertainment spaces to the PLAYER ONE brand while allowing each area to retain its own atmosphere.
Honey Lu Children’s Growth Center covers approximately 4,000 square meters. Moving beyond a conventional playground concept, the project imagines how Earth’s ecosystems might evolve in the future. Children and families embark on an interstellar journey through imagined settings such as Forest City, Wind Valley, and Snow Land.
Turning a story into spatial design: The design team combines the science-fiction atmosphere of space exploration with forms drawn from nature. Metallic circular frames and pipe-like elements shape the reception area, while the central column becomes part of a composition featuring oversized geometric plants and an illuminated ring. Different zones express the project’s imagined future landscapes.
An immersive visual language: Forest City, Wind Valley, and Snow Land are expressed through undulating platforms, rounded forms, and technological details rather than visual graphics alone. These elements extend across the reception area, ceiling, columns, and play facilities, allowing visitors to discover different scenes as they move through the space.
Identify the venue’s core audience and the balance between different attractions. This gives the brand characters, color palette, and spatial atmosphere a clear audience to serve.
Look for design ideas in the brand’s characters, name, local culture, or operating concept. These can become distinctive visual assets that carry the brand across the venue.
The logo, standard colors, core typefaces, and brand characters should follow consistent guidelines. Lighting, decorative forms, and the atmosphere of individual zones can then vary to suit different activities.
Once the concept is established, the drawings need to be developed around the site’s columns, ceiling height, circulation, budget, and fabrication requirements. For international projects, the team should also consider how components will be divided, transported, and installed on-site, ensuring the design can be delivered 100% as intended.
A successful family entertainment center depends on close coordination from early brand positioning and VI design through to the final physical environment.
