Most sports center owners invest heavily in equipment while spending almost nothing on design. Here is a cold fact: that one choice alone will determine if your facility flourishes or gains no visitors. The worldwide market for indoor amusement parks is expanding rapidly, and those who have the most equipment are not necessarily the winners. Rather, they are the ones who have the smartest design strategy.
You may assume that amusement park design is only relevant to theme parks and children’s play areas. However, the most profitable sports centers nowadays are actually taking that playbook and implementing the same strategies. And their successes speak volumes.
Design is not only about the aesthetic appeal of a place. It also determines how individuals navigate your facility, how long they stay, what they purchase, and whether they return. If done correctly, it changes a standard sports center into a place where people socialize and have fun.
Getting a professional team for planning and designing your venue is not just completing a task, but literally setting up a strong basis on which to avoid investment pitfalls and be able to develop competitiveness in the trending sports or entertainment venues.
Many owners tend to buy the equipment, hire a contractor, and open the facility as soon as possible. They neglect professional planning altogether. This will cause the problems which, in the long run, are way more expensive to fix than the expense of prevention if they had been identified at the very beginning.
Typical errors while skipping the design stage:
● Areas with no usage and wasted outdoor/indoor space that bring no money.
● Poor visitor flow results in congestion and visitor frustration.
● Pictures and share-worthy spots are missing, which leads to hitting a hard-to-photograph environment
● Safety non-compliance leading to the issuance of fines or even a shutdown.
● A double standard between activity areas is killing one’s total experience
That is the point where ESAC Design steps into the picture. ESAC has been continuously emphasizing the provision of a one-stop full-service platform from conceptual planning, design, construction, delivery, and operation to indoor theme parks, children's themed spaces, themed entertainment venues, and wax museums both at home and abroad since its establishment in 2003.
After 23 years in the amusement industry and having completed 5,000 projects, ESAC is offering an experience level that most interior design companies simply cannot match. Our capabilities include 100+ professional designers, with a philosophy at the kernel of their activities: that every square meter of a venue should earn its keep.
For more insight into how this really translates into the projects, let's go through two concrete case studies.
ESAC volunteered to transform a 15,000 square meter-long abandoned bus factory into a next-generation family recreation center. By exploiting a 12-meter height of the ceiling, they designed a two-level layout that keeps energetic activities separated from calm social areas.
The place was situated in the New Power Cultural and Creative Park in Nanchang's Economic and Technological Development Zone. The customer's intention was to bring in university students living in the vicinity. They said simply: come up with something hip, physical, and social for the youth.
ESAC introduced a fundamental zoning method of dynamic and static balancing and divided the whole place into three zones. Besides, by utilizing the height, they put the second floor, which resulted in the dynamic and static zones layout on the first floor, as well as leisure and sports on the second floor.
The main floor featured the side-by-side combination of two very different energizing levels. One section had the height of the ceiling utilized for high-altitude non-motorized equipment like combination slides, high-altitude swings, bungee trampolines, and professional rock climbing. On that very floor, the ESAC introduced social activity areas including bowling, billiards, roller skating, interactive somatosensory games, and a water bar that was serving not only the internal customers but the external ones as well.
On the upper floor, the main scope was given to leisure sports and technology experiences, which comprised digital sports, space capsules, VR large-space experiences, cinemas, and party karaoke rooms, essentially mixing leisure with fun.
The theme of the design was "Unlocking Multidimensional Universe Adventures," which resulted in an immersive virtual-reality interactive hub. Main color tones were Klein blue and lemon yellow; these, coupled with the old factory's vintage red-brick hues and the hard texture of metal materials, gave a vivid visual impact that followed the younger generation's aesthetic preferences.
The materials used came very close to the red bricks and steel parts of the old factory as they included corrugated metal panels, perforated steel plates, luminous light strips, and other modern materials.
The outcome? From site entry to completion and delivery of construction, ESAC took only 2 months.
Digital Sports Park's emergence is a major transformation of the amusement sector as it responds to the growing demands of today's customers. Such spots combine physical games with computers and invite people to have fun while getting a workout. Most probably, the young generation, who depend heavily on digital devices for their entertainment, will be the main audience to be drawn this way.
Such digital sports locations will often have a gamification zone with VR games, AR challenges, and also feature eSports contest areas. Besides supporting physical workout and health, this setting facilitates social networking and making friends through teamwork and collaboration, which may explain why a lot of people decide to keep coming back to such a spot.
ESAC has, so far, implemented several digital sports halls both in China and overseas, with each venue being designed according to the client's location, people, and commercial context. The trendy sports center is equipped with various digital sports activities, such as basketball, tennis, football and golf. It also offers high-altitude expansion facilities including rock climbing and giant slides. Besides, there are immersive VR game experiences as well as a catering area for visitors to take a rest.
Compared to a conventional gym or arcade, the architecture of a digital sports hall involves more intricacies. Essentially, one has to incorporate physical movement, tech, and social vibe altogether in one place. Therefore, a definite working paradigm should be there as a part of the design from the very beginning.
A winning design for a hip sports place will never be all about how it looks. Together with that, it will consider how it will work. For example, managing visitor flow, dealing with rush hours, balancing enclosed and free zones, shopping, and team-building will be planned, as they all have a strong influence on the efficiency and profitability of the operations.

Here is a side-by-side comparison of what professional design delivers versus a self-managed renovation:
|
Design Factor |
Professional Design (ESAC) |
Self-Managed Renovation |
|
Safety Compliance |
Built in from day one |
Often added after, at higher cost |
|
Visitor Flow |
Scientifically planned paths |
Often causes congestion |
|
Visual Identity |
Themed, photo-worthy, branded |
Generic, forgettable |
|
Budget Overruns |
Controlled with detailed drawings |
Common due to rework |
|
Time to Open |
Fixed timeline with full oversight |
Often delayed by coordination gaps |
|
Long-Term Upgrades |
Modular design allows easy changes |
Costly full reworks needed |
The numbers are not theoretical. Many investors view design fees as unnecessary expenses, but professional design is the most cost-effective investment because over 80% of budget overruns in trendy sports venue renovations stem from a lack of design planning in the early stages.
Sports & Leisure Centers are not just places for physical activities. First of all, they are businesses. And, similar to other businesses, the way they are designed from scratch determines everything that comes after. Proper design draws the right kind of people, retains them longer, repeats their visits, and eventually they become your best marketing channel.
ESAC Design has demonstrated this through more than 5,000 projects around the world. Whether you are remodeling an old warehouse into a youth sports hub or constructing a digital sports hall from the ground up, the design process is the starting point of your earnings.
