Design Concept: Revitalizing an abandoned factory into a multi-level trendy sports hub by blending industrial heritage with dynamic zoning and youth-oriented immersive experiences.
Keywords: Industrial renovation, Trendy sports center, Immersive experience, Dynamic & static zoning, Old & new symbiosis, Visual impac, Efficient delivery
As the roar of machinery fades into history and the mottled red-brick walls settle with traces of time, the abandoned factory buildings of Nanchang, once an old industrial base, are breaking free from the shackles of time and returning to the public eye in a new form.
In the former Jiangxi Bus Factory area of the Economic and Technological Development Zone, the New Power Cultural and Creative Park is using the magic of "revitalization" to breathe new life into old buildings – and the "Future Space" Trendy Sports Center, designed and constructed by Elephant Sculpture Art Company (ESAC), stands out as a brilliant stroke in this urban renewal movement.
The "Future Space" Trendy Sports Center will grandly open on February 7, inviting you to an encounter between industrial memory and cool, trendy sports.
Nanchang was once a land of industrial dreams for a generation. The old workshops and factories left from the last century are not only witnesses to the city's development but also cultural assets waiting to be activated.
▲ Original appearance of the old factory area
In recent years, the transformation of old factory areas into cultural and creative parks has become a trend. The New Power Cultural and Creative Park is rooted in the site of the original Jiangxi Bus Factory, and the addition of the "Future Space" Trendy Sports Center is the crowning touch of the park. The total space of the venue reaches 15,000㎡, providing ample support for a diverse mix of business formats and is one of the project's core highlights.
As the design and construction party, ESAC deeply deconstructed the project's core, accurately responded to needs, and solved renovation challenges, transforming the silent bus factory into a sports and social destination tailored to the younger generation.
The client's requirements were clear and direct: leverage the location's advantage of being close to several universities to create a trendy sports space with college students as the core audience, catering to young people's preferences.
Taking advantage of the factory's high ceiling (up to about 12 meters), the client's needs, and young people's experiential habits, we established a core zoning approach of "dynamic and static balance," dividing the entire venue into three areas. At the same time, we built a second floor using the height, forming a three-dimensional layout of "dynamic and static zones on the first floor, leisure and sports on the second floor," balancing sports experience with social needs.
Left side of the first floor: Leveraging the ceiling height, we planned a high-altitude non-motorized equipment area, including various combination slides, high-altitude swings, bungee trampolines, professional rock climbing, etc., satisfying young people's need for thrilling challenges. At the same time, we did not limit ourselves to non-motorized equipment; we also integrated popular mechanical equipment such as disco rides and tumbling motorcycles, combined with floor projection interaction to enrich the experience.
Right side of the first floor: Using the height to build a second floor, achieving layered use of space. The first-floor part mainly consists of functional areas and social activity projects, including reception hall, bag storage area, shoe-changing area, restrooms, and other basic functional areas to ensure convenience.
At the same time, we planned social activities such as bowling, billiards, roller skating, interactive somatosensory games, etc., along with a water bar/leisure area that can serve both internal and external customers, meeting young people's need for social gatherings. In the open area at the bottom right, we also created an outdoor camping-style seating area, aligning with current trends and providing a relaxed leisure space for young people.
Second floor: Primarily focused on leisure sports and tech experiences, including digital sports, space capsules, VR large-space experiences, cinemas, party karaoke/private rooms, etc., balancing leisure and fun.
In addition, we introduced 3D printing equipment and a large-area photon projection interactive bumper car – unlike traditional bumper cars, this one can switch between multiple play styles and modes, making it highly innovative and attractive.
The core challenge of the renovation was achieving a symbiosis between the "old" factory and the "new" of trendy sports. We used design as empowerment, extracting the vintage, rugged texture of industrial style while blending the vibrant energy of trend culture. Every design considers both historical marks and cool aesthetics, creating a highly recognizable immersive space.
For the renovation of the factory's exterior, we followed an overall design concept, giving new expression to the old building. Part of the facade uses silver corrugated steel panels to outline a distinct modern silhouette, while another part retains the original red-brick texture of the old building.
We deliberately chose this presentation method to allow contemporary design language to gently converse with the architectural imprints of old times. We are committed to pioneering innovation, yet we never forget that the沉淀 (sediment) of the past is always the solid force that supports us moving forward.
The overall design atmosphere of the space centers on "Unlocking Multidimensional Universe Adventures," creating an immersive virtual-reality interactive hub. Adhering to the concept of "industrial texture coexisting with trendy vitality," we break the monotonous framework of traditional sports venues. Industrial elements are no longer cold symbols but empower each other with trendiness and sports passion, providing young consumers with a social and sports destination to release energy and express individuality.
Klein blue and lemon yellow are the main color tones, paired with the vintage red-brick hues of the old factory and the cold, hard texture of metal materials, creating a strong visual impact that appeals to the younger generation's aesthetics.
Materials include corrugated metal panels, perforated steel plates, luminous light strips, and other modern materials, complementing the red bricks and steel components of the old factory. Delicate light and shadow layers are blended into the cold industrial texture, paired with an exposed-pipe industrial style design, echoing the factory's industrial genes
In addition to diverse business formats and visual design, we created several distinctive highlights to enhance spatial recognition and experience. The biggest highlight is the visually striking "breaking out of the wall" sky flyer attraction, which connects to an outdoor sky track, becoming a landmark experience. It allows riders to enjoy both indoor coolness and outdoor scenery while gliding.
A DJ booth is set up in the center of the venue as the interactive core, capable of serving all three main areas and energizing the atmosphere at any time.
In just 60 days, ESAC transformed a 15,000㎡ abandoned bus factory into "Future Space" – a multi‑level trendy sports center where industrial heritage meets youth culture. With dynamic zoning, immersive visuals, and signature attractions like a wall‑breaking sky flyer, the project redefines indoor entertainment for the college crowd.
